The likeness of his experiences with his father to the events of the Odyssey is not lost on Mendelsohn, and he weaves his own narrative with Homer’s.
What is most heartwarming about this book, however, is Mendelsohn’s narration of his relationship with his father.
Mendelsohn has a wealth of knowledge regarding the Odyssey and classical literature and languages in general, and this expertise is well-used. Daniel Mendelsohn’s new book, An Odyssey: A Father, A Son, and An Epic (New York: Vintage Books, 2018), is both a wonderful exploration of Mendelsohn’s relationship with his father as well as an accessible description of the events of Homer’s Odyssey. An apt teacher, Mendelsohn professionally narrates Homer’s epic, allowing the reader to feel as though they are present in the classroom with Mendelsohn and his class.
